Category:PseudoarchaeologyOne day I learned a little bit of Japanese, I learned about the sesquicentenary of the appearance of the first known book in Japanese, the Nihon Shoki. My Japanese teacher kindly presented me with a little karakuri, which happened to be this adorable cat. To think of that karakuri as the first book in Japanese is amusing and perhaps somewhat poignant. It says a lot about what has happened in the evolution of the Japanese language over the last 200 years.
I couldn't resist the urge to try and translate the text. Perhaps you can help me with a translation of the very short text, or just some helpful tips for this first stab at the unfamiliar alphabetic language.
