American newspaper columnist Rick Carver is convinced that his life is about to undergo a complete and permanent transformation. He's suddenly confronted with a critical fact: His daughter is going to get married. "It's time I got to know my son-in-law," he announces to his wife Carol. "Why not start right now?" The old Rick Carver would have taken this as an invitation to visit his son-in-law's home. But he's the new Rick Carver. He wants to spend the next ten days being a father and nothing else. The rest of the film is about how he goes about it. Halfway into the journey, Carver learns that his son-in-law is an alcoholic, that he had an affair with the best friend of his daughter (the daughter Rick Carver is going to meet) and that he'll soon be moving to Australia. In the final reel, he and his son-in-law celebrate the arrival of a new baby and Carver's wife Carol tells him that she's leaving him. "You have always been the great disappointment of my life," she says. And then they share a kiss. So the new Rick Carver, who didn't know his son-in-law before, makes a discovery that reveals the truth about him. "I've known it for a long time," says Carver.
